The United Nations Office at Nairobi is headed by a Director-General,
Mr. Achim Steiner. UNON includes four major organizational units: the Office
of the Director-General, which liaises with the host country and diplomatic community,
and provides overall executive direction to the other divisions; the United Nations
Information Centre, which serves as the principal source of public information on
UN activities in East Africa; the Division of Conference Services, which services
meetings for a variety of UN agencies, including the offices and convention
secretariats of UNEP and UN-Habitat ; and the Division of Administrative
Services, which handles the day-to-day administration of UNEP, UN-Habitat
and UNON, as well as various common services for the wider UN family in Kenya.
As the key administrative office of the United Nations in Nairobi, UNON serves as
the official headquarters of the broader UN community in Kenya, and, through its
Director-General, as the representative office of the UN Secretary-General in the
capital. As such, it is responsible for liaising with and carrying out all official duties
involving the Kenya Government and permanent diplomatic missions, as well as
maintaining regular liaison and communication with international donors,
development partners, and inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations affiliated to the UN system.
As part of this mandate, the Office of the Director-General coordinates and
facilitates all processes linking UN agencies with the Kenya Government,
including matters of protocol such as visas and letters of credentials, legal
and procedural matters related to UN operations in the country, and the
implementation of the UNs Headquarters Agreement with Kenya. It also
acts as the central point of contact for the Executive Office of the
Secretary-General in New York, arranging everything from his meetings
with government ministers to his schedules, his travel and personal security whenever he visits Kenya.
As its official representative in Nairobi, the Office of the Director-General
maintains regular liaison with the Secretary-Generals office and other
Secretariat offices at UN Headquarters over all political and procedural
matters, represents the United Nations at major meetings and conferences,
and liaises with and informs the Secretary-General on the planning and
implementation of all international functions and inter-governmental meetings that take place in Kenya.
The Office of the Director-General is also responsible for overseeing
the day-to-day management of all the administrative, conference and
common services provided by the various divisions of UNON, as well
as the maintenance of all facilities at the Gigiri Complex. In this regard,
it also liaises with local ambassadors and senior diplomats regarding
security arrangements, petrol, and other duty-free allowances for them and their senior staff.
