Closing ceremony of the Sub-Saharan Africa International Model UN (SAIMUN) Conference

The future belongs to the youth, and the 2024 Sub-Saharan Africa International Model UN (SAIMUN) Conference held at UNON in Nairobi offered a powerful example of that. Over 1,300 young delegates from across Africa tackled critical global issues like climate change, technological advancements, and sustainable development. Their passion and commitment to building a better world resonated throughout the conference.

UNON Director-General Madam Zainab Hawa Bangura delivered a powerful message to the closing ceremony to the young delegates. She urged them to be active participants in shaping their future: "Be part of the process. Do not be left behind. Keep yourself informed. Read and engage in dialogues and discussions." Ms. Bangura's call to action highlights the importance of youth engagement in global affairs.

She reminded them that we stand at an inflection point in our shared history – a moment of great challenges but also of equal opportunity for transformation and progress. Understanding these challenges is the first step toward mastering them. She addressed a few of these challenges; the ongoing technological revolution, the climate change and the need for sustainable energy, the changing global demography and the shifting of the geopolitical landscape.

Africa's youthful population presents both challenges and immense potential. UNON DG emphasized the critical role of education, health, and food security in unlocking this potential and ensuring a prosperous future for the continent. The UN stands firmly behind young people as they advocate for a just and sustainable world.

The UN Charter famously begins with the words "We the Peoples." Ms. Bangura reminded the young delegates that they are not just participants, but integral members of the United Nations. She encouraged them to stay involved, take action, and contribute to shaping the upcoming "Pact for the Future" at the UN's Summit of the Future this September.

SAIMUN 2024 served as a vital platform for these future leaders to develop their skills, network with global experts, and advocate for their vision of a better tomorrow. The conference provided them with an opportunity to:

  • Debate critical global issues: Delegates engaged in simulated UN committees, proposing solutions to complex challenges.
  • Develop negotiation skills: Through negotiation and diplomacy, delegates learned to build consensus and reach agreements.
  • Network with global leaders: Participants had the chance to interact with UN officials, diplomats, and experts.
  • Sharpen leadership skills: SAIMUN fostered leadership development through committee chairships and other leadership roles.

Dear youth, stay engaged, stay informed, and continue to take action.

Together, we can make a difference.
