The United Nations Russian Language Day is celebrated annually on June 6th, marking an important occasion dedicated to recognizing the cultural and linguistic impact of the Russian language within the United Nations and the world. This day was established in 2010 as part of the UN's initiative to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity, ensuring that each of the six official languages of the UN—Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish are each acknowledged for their contribution to humanity from linguistic, diplomatic and cultural perspectives. At UNON, we have also added a commemorative day for Kiswahili in celebration of mother-tongue day.
A little background. June 6th was chosen for Russian Language Day in honour of the famous Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin, often regarded as the father of modern Russian literature. Pushkin’s contributions to the Russian language and poetry are immense, with his works shaping the literary landscape of Russia and beyond. Pushkin’s poetry and prose left an indelible mark on Russian culture, influencing generations of writers, artists, and thinkers. His works reflect themes of love, struggle, and human nature, resonating far beyond Russia’s borders. By commemorating his legacy on this day, the world not only honours the Russian language but also acknowledges literature’s universal ability to connect people across cultures and histories. Pushkin’s legacy makes this date a fitting tribute to the richness and history of the Russian language.
The UN Russian Language Day celebration serves several key purposes. First, it highlights the importance of linguistic diversity in global diplomacy and international communication. Russian (and dialectical variations thereof) remain widely spoken globally. Second, it helps preserve the cultural heritage of the Russian language by promoting literary works, poetry, dance and traditions. Through events such as poetry readings, exhibitions, and educational programmes, the day fosters appreciation and learning.
The UN encourages linguistic diversity to facilitate mutual understanding among nations and cultures. Russian Language Day is a celebration of the contributions of the language to world literature, education, entertainment, politics, and international cooperation. It reminds us of the power of language in connecting people and shaping dialogue in a globalized world.
In addition to celebrating linguistic diversity, UN Russian Language Day plays a crucial role in fostering intercultural dialogue. Languages serve as a bridge between nations, allowing for the exchange of ideas, values, and traditions. By recognizing Russian as one of the UN’s six official languages, the Organization acknowledges its impact on international communication and diplomacy.
Another key aspect of this celebration is its role in promoting education and learning. Institutions and cultural organizations often use Russian Language Day to encourage language acquisition, particularly among non-native speakers, as you would notice in the video today produced by our UNON Multilingualism Team, with the participation of colleagues of different nationalities from various Nairobi-based UN entities. Universities, language centres, and embassies worldwide host events such as public readings of Pushkin’s works, lectures on Russian literature, exhibits of art and dance, as well as interactive sessions on language learning. These efforts help preserve linguistic heritage and inspire interest in the rich traditions associated with the Russian language.
