Your Excellency, Mr. Vsevolod Tkachenko, Ambassador of Russia to the Republic of Kenya,
Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Esteemed Colleagues, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen:
It is a distinct honour to join you today as we commemorate Russian Language Day at the United Nations Office at Nairobi. This observance offers a fitting occasion to reflect on the enduring power of language—not merely as a means of communication, but as a bearer of history, culture, memory and identity, capable of building understanding across nations and generations.
The Russian language occupies an important place in the cultural and intellectual heritage of humanity. Through its remarkable literary tradition, and through contributions in science, mathematics, music and the arts, Russian-speaking scholars, writers and creators have enriched global thought and expanded the horizons of human achievement. At the United Nations, multilingualism remains indispensable to our mission. It is fundamental to inclusion, to mutual respect, and to the practice of diplomacy that listens as well as speaks.
As a centre for regional and international cooperation, UNON is deeply committed to this principle. Here in Nairobi, and across the region, we work with partners and stakeholders from diverse linguistic and cultural traditions. Occasions such as this help to deepen mutual understanding, foster cultural exchange, and reinforce the spirit of cooperation that is essential to addressing the complex and interdependent challenges of our time—from sustainable development and public health to peacebuilding and climate action.
Language also plays a practical and transformative role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. Communication that is clear, inclusive and accessible in multiple languages widens participation, empowers communities, and helps ensure that no one is left behind. In celebrating Russian Language Day, we therefore reaffirm our commitment to multilingualism as a cornerstone of inclusivity, equitable engagement, and effective service to Member States and the peoples we serve.
I encourage us all to use today’s programme as an opportunity to listen, to learn, and to build bridges of understanding. Let us celebrate the contribution of the Russian language and the richness of the heritage it conveys, and let us renew our shared commitment to dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
I extend my sincere appreciation to our Russian-speaking colleagues and partners for their valued contributions to the work of the United Nations and to development efforts around the world. I also wish to thank the UNON Multilingualism Team, Mr. Mohamed Assi and Ms. Claire Viuart, together with all partners and collaborators whose dedication behind the scenes has made today’s celebration possible.
Together, through our respect for linguistic and cultural diversity, we strengthen the foundations of a more just, peaceful and prosperous world.
Thank you.
