On 23 March 2026, the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) welcomed H.E. Mr. Han Zheng, Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, during his official visit to Kenya. He was received by Ms. Zainab Hawa Bangura, Under-Secretary-General and Director-General of UNON, alongside senior United Nations officials.

In her remarks, Director-General Bangura expressed appreciation for China’s longstanding and substantive support to the United Nations, noting its role as the second-largest contributor to the UN’s assessed budget. She underlined that China’s engagement continues to play a vital role in advancing the United Nations’ mandate across peace, development and humanitarian action.

Vice President Han Zheng reaffirmed China’s strong commitment to the United Nations, stating that China remained a firm supporter of a multilateral system centered on the UN, and a dependable partner to the Organization. He expressed readiness to work closely with UN entities and partners to uphold their role and contribute to global peace, stability and shared prosperity.

China has been a consistent champion of multilateralism and international cooperation, which remain central to addressing today’s interconnected global challenges. Its progress in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in poverty eradication, has been widely recognised as historic. China has also played an important role in promoting South-South and triangular cooperation, alongside sustained investments in capacity development, technology transfer and innovation — key drivers of accelerated and inclusive sustainable development globally.

UNON looks forward to continued collaboration with the People’s Republic of China in advancing sustainable development, supporting African-led solutions, and strengthening international cooperation in support of peace and prosperity.
