Remarks by USG Zainab Hawa Bangura, Director‑General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) during the UN Staff Social & Networking Event - Thursday, 21 May 2026 | UN Events and Wellness Centre (EWC)
***********************************
Distinguished Colleagues, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen, good afternoon/ evening.
It is truly a pleasure to join you today and to warmly welcome all colleagues who have recently joined the United Nations family here in Kenya.
This gathering is more than a social occasion—it is a powerful reflection of what our organization stands for: people, partnership, diversity, and a shared commitment to making a difference in people’s lives. You are now part of a vibrant, interconnected UN community that spans agencies, mandates, and expertise, all united by a common purpose, centred on our most important asset – our staff.
Allow me to highlight three themes that are especially important as you begin and /or continue your journey with the United Nations in Kenya—collaboration, community, and wellbeing.
First, collaboration.
The United Nations in Kenya represents one of the most dynamic multi-agency environments anywhere in the world. Just about every facet of UN operations is represented here, perhaps with the exception of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Our impact depends not only on what we do individually, but on how effectively we work together. I encourage you to actively seek out opportunities to collaborate across offices and disciplines, to learn from one another, and to build partnerships that amplify our collective results.
Second, community.
Joining a new organization—especially in a new country for some—can be both exciting and challenging. Here at the UN in Kenya, we strive to foster a strong sense of belonging and community where every colleague feels valued, respected, and included. Today’s event is an important step in building those connections—so I encourage you to engage, introduce yourselves, and build networks that will support you both professionally and personally.
Third, staff wellbeing.
Your wellbeing is fundamental to your effectiveness and to our shared success. The UN system in Kenya offers a range of services—from health and counselling through the Joint Medical Service, to safety and security, and staff engagement platforms such as UNKLESA. Nairobi also disposes of a very diverse and vibrant local and international community with affordable living standards and amenities that support wellbeing, work-life balance and improved quality of life - truly second to none of the other UN headquarter duty stations in the world. Please take full advantage of these resources. A healthy, supported workforce is essential to achieving our mission.
Dear colleagues,
As you settle into your roles, I invite you to bring your full selves to this work—to contribute your ideas, your energy, and your dedication with passion. The challenges we face globally are complex, but together—as one UN—we are stronger, more agile, and better equipped to deliver meaningful results.
Let me conclude by thanking the HR Working Group for organizing this important initiative, and for creating a platform that strengthens our unity and shared purpose.
I wish you all a successful and enjoyable event—and once again, welcome to the United Nations community in Kenya.
Thank you.
